The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India has introduced Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). The scheme was launched on 1st May 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. PMUY is a social welfare scheme which provide free LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) connections to those citizens who are comes under below-poverty-line households. The aim of the program is to promote clean cooking fuel and improve health and socioeconomic conditions especially for women living in rural areas. The target under the scheme was to release 8 Crore LPG Connections to the underprivileged households by March 2020. On 7th September 2019, Government handed over the 8th Crore LPG connection in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.

Eligibility Criteria

To be a part of this Yojana, farmers should fulfill these eligibility criteria:

  • Applicant should be a permanent resident of India.
  • Age of the applicant should be 18 years or above.
  • Applicant should be a woman from a BPL family who doesn’t have LPG connection.
  • Applicant should not be availing any benefit under other similar schemes.
  • Beneficiaries should be included in the list of SECC 2011 or BPL households under SC/ST households, PMAY (Gramin), AAY, Most Backward Classes (MBC), forest dwellers, people residing in river islands or Tea and Ex-Tea Garden Tribes.
