The financing program for Strategic Basic Research or SBO seeks to innovate scientific concepts. The SBO program has two application areas such as a social component for initiatives with a societal goal and an economic part for enterprises with a purely economic goal.

The social program component is the clear choice, nevertheless, if social stakeholders are the primary participants. A project concept and strategy that the research consortium creates together with stakeholders from the desired value chain are characteristics of successful SBO efforts. Profile Applicants And Conditions
- As a group of researchers, you hope to carry out creative research that opens doors for fresh social or economic uses while closely collaborating with possible economic and/or political players. In order to fulfill this requirement, applicants must form an advisory committee made up of prospective economic or societal users (with the following exception advisory committees are not required for projects that intend to create spin-off companies).
- You require bench fees, equipment and staff funds in order to do this study.
- Your affiliation with the organization or organizations meets the criteria for a research organization.
- The produced scientific results belong to the project partners. The intellectual property rights of scientific achievements must be transferred to a financial role under terms that are consistent with the market.

Procedure
- As the project supervisor it is your duty to use the FWO e-portal to prepare your proposal and send your pre-proposal by 13 September 2024 at 5 PM to your host institution which is the principal applicant for the proposal.
- At minimum, the following details have to be included in this pre-proposal such as the project’s title and duration are listed under the General tab the non-confidential summary and detailed scientific and valorization innovation objectives are listed under the Summary tab, the full consortium members are listed under the Applicants tab the research topic is specified under the Peer Review tab along with the choice of the thematic SBO expert panel and experts to be avoided (optional, maximum three). Furthermore, consent must be granted by clicking the Consent link and approving the statement.
- Two stages of internal peer review are applied to the project application, expert advice and written input from the applicants. (I) The findings of the external referees and the rebuttal are used by thematic SBO-expert committees to assess the project proposals within their scientific purview. (II) For all initiatives within their finality, the steering committees (economic and sociological parts) serve as meta-review panels. They suggest rating the application for the projects.
- At its meeting in May 2025, the FWO board of trustees made the decision about support, taking into account the SBO’s available resources.
