The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved the proposal of Department of Telecom (DoT) to increase Broadband rapidly through Public Wi-Fi networks under the framework of the Prime Minister’s Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI). PM WANI stands for Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface. The government has started a free Wi-Fi scheme during the cabinet meeting. Under this program the government will provide free Wi-Fi to small shopkeepers to increase their income and financial structure. This program will facilitate the ease of doing business and encourage local shops and small establishments to become Wi-Fi providers. This program will take ahead the goal of National Digital Communications Policy, 2018 (NDCP) of creating a strong digital communications infrastructure.
