The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, The Government of India has launched the Dr Ambedkar Foundation Marriage Scheme in the year 2013 and the Prime Minister of India Sri Narendra Damodar Modi has made an announcement about the scheme. The aim of the scheme is to appreciate the socially bold step of an Inter-caste marriage taken by the newly wedded couple. The Government will provide financial incentive to the couple which enables them to settle down in the initial phase of their married life. Inter-Caste marriage can be one of the important steps to reduce the caste-prejudices, eliminate ‘untouchability’ and spread the values of liberty, equality, togetherness, etc in the society.

The objectives of the Dr Ambedkar Foundation Marriage Scheme are as follows:

  • The primary objective of launching the Scheme is to appreciate the socially bold step of an Inter-caste marriage taken by the newly wedded couple.
  • Another objective of the scheme is to provide financial incentive to the couple which enables them to settle down in the initial phase of their married life.
  • It is clarified that this scheme is not launched as a supplementary scheme to an employment generation or poverty relief scheme.

Benefits & Features Of Dr Ambedkar Foundation Marriage Scheme

Here are some benefits & features of Dr Ambedkar Foundation Marriage Scheme, which are as follows:

  • The financial incentive for an inter-caste marriage will be Rs. 2.50 Lakh per marriage.
  • On a Pre-Stamped Receipt of a Ten Rupee Non-Judicial Stamp Paper, an amount of Rs. 1.50 Lakh will be provided to the eligible couple through RTGS / NEFT to the joint account of the couple and the remaining amount will be kept in a Fixed Deposit in the Foundation for a period of 3 years.
  • The remaining amount will be released to the married couple along with the interest accrued thereon on 3 years of sanction of the incentive by the Foundation.
  • The Government will provide financial incentive to the couple which enables them to settle down in the initial phase of their married life.
  • Inter-Caste marriage will be one of the important steps to reduce the caste-prejudices, eliminate ‘untouchability’ and will spread the values of liberty, equality, togetherness, etc in the society.

Eligibility Criteria

To avail the benefit under Dr Ambedkar Foundation Marriage Scheme, you should fulfill these eligibility criteria:

  • Applicant should be a permanent resident of India.
  • One of the spouses should belong to Scheduled Caste and the other belongs to a Non-Scheduled Caste.
  • The marriage should be valid as per the law and duly registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. An affidavit of their being legally married and in matrimonial alliance would be submitted by the couple.
  • In cases, where marriage is registered other than Hindu Marriage Act 1955, the couple is required to furnish a separate certificate as per Annexure-1 of the Format.
  • No incentive is available on second or subsequent marriage.
  • Proposal will be valid if submitted within one year of marriage.
  • If the couple has already received any incentive from the State Govt. / UT Administration for this purpose, the amount approved / released to the couple will be adjusted from the total incentive that could be released to them under this Scheme.
  • The proposal to give incentive under the Scheme should be recommended either by sitting Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or the District Collector / Magistrate and submitted by the State / UT Government / District Magistrate / District Collector/ Deputy Commissioner.

Required Documents

To avail the benefit under Dr Ambedkar Foundation Marriage Scheme, candidates should have these following documents:

  • Aadhaar Card of both bride and groom
  • Residence Certificate of both bride and groom
  • Application Proforma
  • At least one SC Certificate
  • OBC/ST/DNC/OC/General Caste Certificate
  • Proof of Age for both bride and groom
  • Income Certificate (If both partners are employed, each should provide a separate certificate)
  • Marriage Certificate under Hindu Marriage Act 1955
  • Religion Certificate in case other than Hindu Marriage Act 1955
  • Date of Submission of application within one year of Marriage
  • First Marriage Affidavit / Certificate
  • Recommendation from MP/MLA
  • Recommendation of District Collector / Magistrate and submitted by the State / UT Government / District Magistrate / District Collector/ Deputy Commissioner
  • Details of joint bank account
  • Applicants are required to submit recommendation letters along with these documents. These letters should be issued by either the MP or the MLA in the respective area

Application Procedure For Dr Ambedkar Foundation Marriage Scheme

To apply for Dr Ambedkar Foundation Marriage Scheme, please follow the below mentioned steps:

  • The complete application form along with a recommendation, from a current Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly, should be directly submitted to the Dr Ambedkar Foundation.
  • Before forwarding the application to the Dr Ambedkar Foundation, the state Government or District Administration should furnish their recommendation, which will accompany the application.
  • All complete applications are thoroughly reviewed and submitted to the Chairman of the Dr Ambedkar Foundation and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for further processing.
  • Upon approval, the financial incentive will be transferred to the beneficiary through Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS).
